청소년 권장도서로 주인공을 통해 죽음 또한 인생의 자연스러운 과정이라는 걸 알려준다. 영국인이 썼는데 어쩐지 동양적인 느낌이 물씬 나는 소설이다. 영혼의 존재에 대한 믿음, 인생을 강에 비유하는 점, 재를 강에 뿌리는 점 등이 몹시 동양적으로 느껴졌다.

제스는 부모님과 할아버지와 함께 산다. 제스가 수영경기를 하던 날 할아버지는 심장에 무리가 와 쓰러진다. 때마침 다음 주에 할아버지의 고향으로 가족여행이 예정되어 있었는데, 가족들의 만류에도 불구하고 할아버지는 여행을 가겠다고 하신다. 결국, 제스와 가족들은 할아버지와 함께 여행을 떠난다. 강이 흐르는 시골과 외딴집에서 머무르게 되었다. 이곳에서 할아버지는 마지막 작품인 '리버보이'를 그리고자 한다. 제스는 가족들을 뒤로하고 강가로 나가 산책을 하기도 하고 수영을 하기도 하는데 강에서 신비한 소년을 만나게 된다. 제스는 그 소년을 왠지 리버보이라 부른다. 할아버지는 몸이 점점 약해져 가고, 그림을 완성할 수 없어 좌절한다. 제스는 그런 할아버지가 안타깝다. 리버보이는 제스에게 해결법을 알려주고, 그 대신 자기 부탁을 들어달라고 한다. 제스는 할아버지가 그림을 완성할 수 있도록 도와드리고 다음날 리버보이의 부탁을 들어주러 간다. 리버보이는 자기와 함께 강의 시작점부터 끝까지 함께 수영하자고 하지만, 제스는 리버보이를 따라갈 수 없었다. 집으로 돌아온 제스는 알프레드 할아버지를 통해 할아버지가 병원에 실려 간 것과 할아버지가 고통스러워 하는 걸 제스가 보지 않길 원한다는 걸 알게 된다. 제스는 왠지 리버보이를 따라가야 할 것만 같아, 다시 강의 시작점으로 갔다. 이미 먼저 가서 보이지 않는 리버보이를 따라 다이빙을 하고 수영을 해서 계속 나간다. 보이지 않고 따라잡을 수 없을 것만 같던 리버보이를 다시 강에서 만나게 되고, 제스는 리버보이와 함께 강의 끝, 바다의 시작까지 수영한다. 물가로 올라가자, 경찰이 제스를 발견하고, 부모님께 데려다준다. 할아버지를 화장하고, 제스는 할아버지를 강에 뿌려드린다. 

대략적인 줄거리이다. 인생은 흐르는 강물과 같고, 시작이 있으면 당연히 끝도 있는 것이다. 그 끝은 결국 바다로 흘러들어지만 바다는 변함이 없다. 누군가는 죽지만, 우리 안에서 영원히 사라지는 것은 아니다.

리버보이는 전지적 작가 시점에서 쓰였는데, 화자가 제스였다면 훨씬 와 닿고 재미있지 않았을까 싶다. 게다가 전지적 작가 시점인 것치고는 많은 부분에서 설명이 생략되어서 아쉽다. 제스가 어떻게 영혼을 볼 수 있었는지, 제스가 보고 대화를 나눈 리버보이는 정말 할아버지였는지에 대한 설명이 전혀 없다. 또 풍경에 대한 묘사가 많아 다소 지루했다.

또 제스가 그다지 현실적이지 않다. 15살 아이치고는 너무 성숙하다. 가족보다는 한창 친구들과 어울리고 싶어 하고 혼자 있는 걸 못 견뎌 하는 나이인데, 제스는 사뭇 다르다. 아픈 할아버지를 배려하고 도와드리며, 부모님을 걱정시키지 않으려 한다. 친구도 없는 외딴곳에서 혼자인 것도 괜찮다. 나잇대에 맞지 않게 너무 성숙한 느낌이다. 또 마지막에 11시간 동안 강에서 수영하는데 전문적으로 훈련받지 않은 사람, 게다가 15살의 아이가 할 수 있는 일은 아닌 것 같다.

Everything changes, Jess. Everything. Nothing stays the same. Nothing lasts forever. There's no use fighting it. We have to accept it. (p.35)

More enduring, even if not permanent. She knew that even these things around her would pass away someday: trees would wither, rocks would crumble, and even the gabbling stream would one day dry up, though she didn't like to think of that. (p.77-78)

She looked down, hoping his remark was based on luck rather than wisdom. (p.92)

She thought back to what the boy had said about the river; that even when it reaches the end, it'll already have started renewing it self here. she hadn't understood him then; but she understood now.

She tipped again and sprinkled more ashes into the water and watched them float away, specks of Grandpa's life but no longer part of him, nothing to cling to, nothing to hold him back.

Or her.

Life would go on again. (p.233)

She knew that the spirit of Grandpa was not here in this place of magic, but in her, in Mom and Dad, In Alfred, in everyone who had ever known him. (p.234)

In River Boy Jess must find the part of herself that is Grandpa – the river boy. Once she’s done that she is reconciled to his death.

Grandpa finds the part of himself that he lost when his parents died – he has to come back to the river and find that spirit in order to paint it and complete his life. Jess helps him to do this as she is the only other person who understands his passion for the river, swimming and achievement.

The river is a symbol of all human life – constantly changing and flowing. Life has to flow with the current and all human life is finite.

The river teaches Jess about time and change. Its spirit speaks to Jess and helps her accept the death of her grandfather.

Jess feels unable to come to terms with Grandpa’s death. But the encounter with the river of Grandpa’s boyhood helps her accept change. She sees his boyhood, senses how like her he was, helps him to realize his goals and shares with him the fulfilment of those goals in preparation for his death and her acceptance of that death.

The finishing of the painting is the same event as the river swim, but played out in different minds.

We see everything through Jess’s consciousness – the novel is really the exploration of a young woman’s growing awareness of human life/death. Grandpa’s death is the birth of a new heroic spirit.

The whole thing is in Jess’s imagination – it’s how she copes with Grandpa dying.
